History
"Buccheri is a hamlet on the plain; it is an important and densely-populated village, rich of soil products and with abundant fruit”. Thus Edrisi described the village in the thirteenth century, the one destroyed by the earthquake in 1693. After the reconstruction, however, Buccheri, remains an "important village”, proud of its historical and artistic treasures, still surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Iblei valley which, according to the myth, was pasture for Dafni's flocks. Returning to history, it is certain that the Arabs transformed the village of prehistoric origin, although the birth of a town must be attributed to the Normans, who built the houses next to the sturdy castle.

What to see

The Church of Sant'Antonio, built in the eighteenth century. It's an imposing building, with three floors rising at the end of a beautiful staircase which seems to continue up the bell tower that occupies the central part of the façade. The interior is divided in three naves and contains works by Wilhelm Borremans.

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena dates back to the the eighteenth century as well. Its façade is elegantly marked by tall stone columns, niches with statues of saints and strange bell openings decorated with balconies. Inside, you can admire the sixteenth-century marble statue of St. Magdalen.

The Church of Sant'Ambrogio is the main church of the village and is among the less old, having been completed in the nineteenth century. Inside, you can admire a sixteenth-century wooden crucifix on the main altar.

The Quattro Canali fountain (of the four pipes) was inaugurated in 1585 and has never ceased to fulfill its task. Although the wrinkles of time have turned into scars, the four masks from which water gushes (just three of them are actually “active”) are still silent witnesses of nearly half a millennium of history.

The old centre boasts plenty of picturesque corners, arches and walls held up by history, and every spring Art Deco details seem to bloom from the corners of the main streets of the village.

Around the village
The Church of Sant'Andrea, deep in the woods surrounding the village, seems to date back to Swabian times. It has a romantic portal with a double marble arch.
The fifteenth century Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie is set in the pine forest of Santa Maria. It was rebuilt several times and keeps the effigy of the Assumption, to which people turn for protection against epidemics

Feasts
Medfest: this festival fills the streets of Buccheri in the month of August with the colorful historical re-enactment of the siege of 1265, when the French tried to take advantage of three days of celebration to attack and conquer the disarmed and distracted village. But residents of Buccheri were helped by acrobats, musicians and actors who had come to town to take part in the festivities, fleshing out the ranks against the enemy who was soon forced to admit defeat (information: tel. 0931 873566)
