History
The medieval town of Sortino was at first part of the fief owned by the powerful families Moncada and Eredia. In 1477 it became the property of the Gaetani family, coming from Pisa. Heavily damaged during the earthquake of 1542 and then razed to the ground by that in 1693, it was rebuilt on the hill called Cugno del Rizzo.

What to see

The Collegio Church (1742) has beautiful frescoes in the vault, by Crestadoro.

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista is the Main Church. It has an imposing façade, perfectly representing the wealth of fine Baroque in 1734.
Massive columns characterize the central part of the façade, with niches and statues, topped by an elegant balcony surmounted by three belfries. The portal, in bronze, is underlined by two pairs of really beautiful twisted columns. The interior is embellished with frescoes by Giuseppe Crestadoro and the paintings Deposition and St. Michael attributed to Vito D'Anna.

The Annunziata Church has a simple façade. It is almost entirely frescoed by Crestadoro; above the main altar there's a beautiful altar table depicting The Annunciation (1551) by an unknown author.

The Montevergine Complex is made of a monastery and a church. Inside the latter there are frescoes by Sebastiano Lo Monaco depicting the Expulsion of the merchants from the temple and the Triumph of Faith. The floor is made of majolica tiles and portrays The miraculous catch.

The Church of Santa Sofia, in white stone, is announced by an imposing staircase that leads up to the portal, decorated with a pair of beautiful spiral columns. Inside, a precise wooden statue representing St. Francis from Paola.

Museums

A casa do fascitraru is the beekeeping museum. It was opened some years ago, thus allowing the public to visit the home of a beekeeper and to get to know the tools that make it possible to produce honey, rightly called the gold of Sortino. Among other things you can see the ferula, the plant used to make the hives (fascetri) and the tools for percolating and pressing (in via Gioberti, 5 - tel. 0931 952992).

The Museo Civico dell’Opera dei Pupi (Civic Puppet Theatre Museum) collects the best of the Iblean tradition through the collection of puppeteer Don Ignazio Puglisi. There are more than thirty puppets, the theatre and all the strange machines used to do all sorts of noise (in Corso Umberto - tel. 338 8833058

Feasts
The festival of honey is held every first weekend in October. Iblean honey, which was celebrated by Virgil and Ovid, is the protagonist for three days. Dozens of fly pitch are set up, offering visitors all kinds of honey produced here as well as sweets and cakes prepared with honey such as sanfurricchi, pignoccata and piretti.

What to eat
Besides honey, that we really recommend that you enjoy at least in a couple of types, in addition to olive oil, cheese and all the products of this wonderful land, do not miss the pizzolo, a sort of pizza stuffed with vegetables or cheese (but also with meat or fish), or, as a dessert, with chocolate cream, ricotta and honey, pistachio or strawberries.
